Heroes In The Workplace

By Elroy Z. Uta

First, I need you to pause for a moment. If you’re in your workplace I need you to look around, and if you’re not then I need you to imagine your workplace. Would you agree with me if I say that you have a hero hiding somewhere behind the desk? Now hold that thought for a moment.

Everyday Heroes
“People, who go to work every day, make sacrifices to raise families, and get through life without hurting other people if they can help it-those are the real heroes.”
―Dean Koontz, Winter Moon

If I ask you what your definition of a hero is, most probably your answer might be a person typically revered because of his or her bravery and honourable qualities. Maybe you’ll think about our National Heroes, and the men and women who made this country what it is today. But heroes aren’t merely people who fought and died for our country, or those who saved others from, say, a burning building. Arthur Ashe is the first African American who won the US Open and Wimbledon, and he said, “True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” In short, a Hero can be just an ordinary person who makes his/her ordinary work extraordinary.

So how does this apply to our workplace?

We need to remember that an organization is a combination of teams spread out across the network we call ”the organizational chart”, and each team or unit is composed of people who possess various roles.

These same people will spend most of their waking hours fulfilling their assigned roles. They give their lives in the organization, often sacrificing their time in the process. For me, they are the unsung heroes who get things done, doing the extra mile, totally underrated and out of the limelight.

In our organization, these heroes are the strongest strand of the fabric that holds our company together. That’s you and me. Without us, our organization may not survive.

Recognizing our everyday heroes

“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.”
—Helen Keller

As cliché as it may sound, how many organizations do you think have emphasized the words above? How many company vision/mission statements embrace that kind of mantra?

I remember a quote that says, “An organization is only as good as its people.” I believe in that quote. I believe that the success of an organization largely depends upon its people united towards a common goal. And equally important is that people should also be praised, valued, rewarded, and recognized for their contribution.

It’s not rocket science that everyone feels the need to be recognized and to feel a sense of achievement for their work or even for a valiant effort.

That’s why every year, The Brown Group of Companies; hold its Annual Service Awards Ceremony. The Service Awards Program recognizes employees who have their service anniversary and to honour the contributions as well as the sacrifices made by these men and women in our workplace. The success of the Brown group is absolutely dependent upon these kind folks and it’s important that we identify these heroes. Employees need to feel valued and appreciated because they spend more time with their work compared to many other relationships in their lives.

People who feel appreciated are more inclined to contribute as much as they can, because they know that their hard work is being recognized. The more you show your appreciation, the more likely you will end up with hardworking employees who want nothing more than to represent your business in the best way possible.

Heroes in the workplace

Now let’s go back to your workplace. The heroes of our organization are the people you meet every day in the hallway, the person who greets you as you punch your time in the biometric, they are your co-workers, your best buddies, your partners.

These heroic employees pride themselves on knowing that they did their job well and sometimes their only consolation is just the silent thought of accomplishment for making it through a tough deadline.

We know who they are, we know the amount of effort and sacrifice that they put into their job, and so would it be nice if we can show them how much we appreciate what they do? And if we appreciate someone, can we not keep it a secret?

A pat on the back or a thank you note will certainly do. Can you do it now?

Unsung Heroes

By Khristine O. Echeveria

Heroes are people who are admired for their distinguished courage, bravery (deeds) and nobility (qualities).

Anybody can actually be a hero. One doesn’t have to die for the nation to be one, or shoot the ball on the last second for the win; just by merely having a willing heart and being able to make even a small difference in other people’s lives, already makes one a hero.

We often do not recognize or appreciate the little things other people have done. Like the unsung heroes of our everyday life. Our parents, our friends, our siblings or even our colleagues, who just happen to run the “extra-extra” mile just so the team could achieve its goal.

We have a number of employees/colleagues who are often left unrecognized for genuine acts of concern and substantial efforts for the company. Though they do not require recognition for such acts, yet, they deserve true gratitude. I believe it’s not a matter of “Nah, they’re being paid for it!” but, it’s really about valuing the heroism these employees do possess. It’s unfortunate for anybody to overlook the efficiency, dependability and reliability of its asset, and our people are our companies’ asset. So…

Kudos to all Organizational Heroes! Same goes to all the Service Awardees. The 5, 10, 15 and 20 years of unparalleled dedication you have given to the company are such a noteworthy act. I pray that as pillars of the organization, we would continue striving to be models and heroes. Even if unsung, what matters more is the heart of a hero that remains in us.

I am a HERO. Won’t you agree?

Dr. and Mrs. Brown celebrate birthdays

As we end the summer season and start the third quarter of 2014, we are glad to celebrate the birthdays of the pillars of this company, Dr. Walter Brown and Mrs. Annabelle Brown. To mark these occasions, two separate activities were held.

For Dr. Brown, a rosary and thanksgiving mass were offered at Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel that was mostly attended by the employees and executives of the Brown group of companies. It was a time to quietly reflect all that has been achieved in the past months as well as a chance to offer our personal intentions. Then as a community, we joyously shared the snacks given after the mass. Our fellow employees from ABCI – Butuan and ABERDI Mill also held their own separate Rosary offered for the birthday celebration of our beloved Chairman.

On the other hand, Ma’am Annabelle was serenaded by a group of talented Brown Group employees as an advance birthday celebration. As the photos clearly show, she was caught by surprise. Songs like “Iingatan Ka“ and “Wind Beneath My Wings” resonated in the bar lounge. A short program followed and thoughtful birthday wishes from our fellow employees delighted Mrs. Brown. Of course, the celebration will not end without some insightful message from our dear Chairman. As always, his speeches were passionate and heartwarming.

Congratulations to all who made these preparations possible. On behalf of the entire team of the Brown Group of Companies, we wish our dear Dr. and Mrs. Walter Brown a very happy birthday. May your life be filled with happiness, success and good health.

Natural ways to fab hair

We all have experienced having hair tangled in our comb, don’t we? Everyday, we take a bath, shampoo and condition our hair. Chemicals seep in though them causing dryness, stiffness and brittleness. How do we make our hair silky and smooth naturally? There are actually plenty of ways.

  1. Mayonnaise does a lot of wonders for our hair by making it look vibrant, shiny and healthy. Just massage 1/2 cup of mayonnaise thoroughly in your scalp, cover with a shower cap for about 15-20 minutes, shampoo and rinse few times to get all the mayonnaise out.
  2. Beer contains protein that repairs dull and damaged hair. It can deeply soothe and nourish hair follicles. It can revive our hair’s natural glow, shine and bounce. Apply a small amount of beer over your wet hair. Massage gently.
  3. Banana Avocado mask could also heal your damage hair. The healing nutrients of the avocado and banana could recover the hair’s elasticity and strength. Mash the banana, avocado and an egg together in a bowl. Apply mixture from root to tips. Keep it for about 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with mild shampoo. This mask will deeply moisture, nourish your hair, and prevent split ends.
  4. One of the best remedies we all know is using a natural and cheap hot oil treatment. I am speaking of natural oil from coconut, corn, olive and castor oil. These could be use to restore the hairs shine. You may combine them or use them alone. Heat the oil/solution until it is slightly warm. Cool it before applying on your scalp. Cover head with shower cap. Rinse and shampoo after 1 and half or 2 hours.

April 28, 2013 – Palm Concepcion launches Green PARC project

In line with Palm Concepcion Power Corporation’s (PCPC) Social Development Program for the 135MW Coal-fired power plant project in Barangay Nipa, Concepcion, Iloilo, a community based tree planting activity was organized by the company in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region VI, the Province of Iloilo, the Municipality of Concepcion and the Puntales Producer’s Cooperative.

In a simply ceremony held on April 19, 2013 at PCPC’s project site grounds, the project Green Program for Active Reforestation and Conservation (Green P.A.R.C.) was launched by the company. PCPC President, Mr. Roel Z. Castro said in his introduction, ‘This project aims to contribute to the expansion of Mount Apitong forest near the power plant site with an initial area of five (5) hectares as identified by DENR Region VI.”

“We will be maintaining a nursery of seedlings to continuously populate the trees in the impacted areas of the Coal-Fired Power Plant project and further contribute to the restoration and conservation of identified mangrove areas by the DENR in the Province of Iloilo”, he added.

PCPC Chairman, Dr. Walter W. Brown, is present in the said activity to show his full support for the project.

“We would like to continuously help in restoring the environmental and economic benefits that the forest provides to the community through this project”, he said.

To supplement PCPC seedling requirements, the Province of Iloilo donated appropriate seedlings for the planting site.  The Province of Iloilo was represented by Dr. Raul N. Banias, Provincial Administrator, who handed over the seedlings to Dr. Brown and Mr. Castro in a ceremonial turn-over during the program.

The Municipality of Concepcion led by Honorable Mayor Milliard Villanueva, was in full force showing that they are one with the company and the community in this pro-environment undertaking.

Volunteers from the host barangay and the partner local government units took time out to participate in this endeavour showing that the program served as a vehicle to strengthen and unify the local community.

PCPC recognizes the need to maintain a healthier ecosystem for the host community and the province as a whole through the reforestation and conservation of the environment especially in the areas affected by the power plant project.

This coal-fired power plant project which was launched last January 15, with a ground breaking ceremony in Barangay Nipa, Concepcion, Iloilo, will use the circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) technology and will be one of the most advanced and most fuel-efficient plant in the Visayas. May 2, 2013 – A Brown Co. eyes 12 power facilities in Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines—Publicly listed A Brown Co. Inc. plans to put up 12 power projects that will generate a total of 110 megawatts of “peak” capacity for electricity-starved Mindanao.

The projects are expected to provide much-needed additional power supply for the so-called A+ or green-rated electric cooperatives in Mindanao, the company said in a regulatory filing Monday.

According to A Brown, its unit Peakpower Energy Inc. will implement the 12 projects, under separate “build-operate-maintain and transfer agreements for brand-new bunker-fired engines, which will last for 15 years.”

The projects will have a short gestation under a take or pay arrangement on the capital expenditure, and will have direct connection to the grid.

A Brown explained that the planned facilities would “address the lack of base load power in the Mindanao grid for the next two to three years.”

It will also allow the cooperatives “to meet the needs for peaking power,” A Brown added.

After signing a power purchase and transfer agreement with South Cotabato II Electric Cooperative, a 20-megawatt will be installed in the heart of General Santos City in the next 12 months.

At present, A Brown is involved in the construction of a 135-MW coal-fired power project in Concepcion, Iloilo. The facility, which is expected to be commissioned by 2015, will fill the anticipated power supply gap in Panay and the Visayas grids by 2016, the company said.

“While only 135-megawatt is on a firm basis, the plant site and support units are programmed for two units. The preparations for the second unit are forecast to begin two to three years after commissioning of the first unit,” A Brown further said.

A Brown is also eyeing a 26-MW hydropower project in Surigao and is currently awaiting the approval of its application for a renewable energy service contract.

May 15, 2013 – Ayala group sells stake in Iloilo power project

While it was practically its first equity acquisition in a coal-fired power project, the energy unit of the Ayala Group is now abandoning its stake in the 135-megawatt Iloilo power project.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, AC Energy Holdings Inc. (ACEHI), the power subsidiary of Ayala Corporation, noted that it sold back its 40-percent shareholdings in the project to Palm Concepcion Power Corporation (PCPC).

PCPC is the corporate vehicle implementing the development of the coal-fired plant; and with Ayala’s sell-out, publicly-listed firm A. Brown Company Inc. will become its majority equity holder again.

“The sale by ACEHI is a result of its strategic decision to focus on other power projects imminent in its development pipeline,” the Ayala firm has emphasized.

In its own disclosure to the local bourse, A. Brown has noted that Palm Thermal Consolidated Holdings Corporation (PTCHC) “has taken the opportunity to acquire the entire stake of ACEHI.” The sale also lumped in the land holding company of the project.

PCPC noted that despite the departure of its major partner, it “will continue to pursue the power plant project as scheduled.” The other partner in the venture is local firm Jin Navitas Resource Inc.

Aside from the Iloilo project, the Ayala group is in partnership with Trans-Asia Oil and Energy Development Corporation of the Phinma Group for a 135-MW power plant venture in Calaca, Batangas. The facility has already been slated for expansion of another 135MW and construction is targeted this year.

Another one in Ayala firm’s energy portfolio is its acquired stake in the 600-megawatt GNPower coal-fired project, a facility that is now contributing to the power supply of Luzon grid.

For the Iloilo project, PCPC previously disclosed that long-term coal supply for the facility has already been firmed up with PT Pevensey. It will draw from its Arjuna coal mine in East Kalimantan.

The plant, which will be sited in a 30-hectare property, will help meet the electricity supply of Visayas grid in the medium term.
